The Sedgwick County Democratic Party elects new leadership that is more representative of the party
Wichita, KS (August 31, 2020)- This past Saturday during their biennial reorganization meeting, the Sedgwick County Democratic Party elected bold new leadership. This change represents a historic moment for the party as the first time that African Americans hold both the Chair and Vice Chair positions. The offices of the new executive board are once again primarily held by women, and three of the five serving officers are under 35.
“The Sedgwick County Democratic Party recognizes the importance of diversity and inclusion in leadership roles, and the need to make room for the new voices leading us into the future. We are thrilled to announce the election of Joseph Shepard as the Chair of SCDP,” said Secretary Lindsay Drees. Joseph, a former Wichita State SGA President and USD 259 school board candidate, is currently the Director of Multicultural Engagement and Campus Life at Newman University. He is known as a strong advocate for the Wichita community and is especially engaged in issues affecting young people and marginalized groups.
Joseph serves alongside Danielle Johnson, the second-term Vice Chair of SCDP. Danielle, a well known community connector, currently works as the Assistant Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Wichita State University and is the Co-Owner of Inclusive Growth Strategies. The executive board will be rounded out by Lindsay Drees serving as secretary, Beckie Jenek serving as treasurer, and Randy Rathbun serving as parliamentarian.
“The election of our new executive board shows that the SCDP has our eyes on the future and we are ready to move the county forward. We are excited to work together as a board to serve the many diverse voices that make up Sedgwick County,” said Shepard.
The mission of the Sedgwick County Democratic Party is to promote grassroots organization, to encourage Democrats to engage in their communities, to activate and educate voters, and to support Democratic candidates for office up and down the ballot. SCDP works to improve Sedgwick County by recruiting and supporting quality Democratic Candidates for office and empowering voters through outreach and education.
